the Artists
Joseph Bennett
When Joseph Bennett first saw images of Joseph Cornell's work, he became an instant follower. The experience changed his life. Since that time, he has exhibited his assemblages in more than 50 galleries and museums. His work is held in private collections in the US, Mexico and Europe. A classically trained ballet dancer, with degrees in business, education and psychology, Bennett also has a background in interior design and theater. Largely self-taught, he considers himself an environmentalist and his sculptures are constructed of found objects. Bennett uses recycled materials such as bits of metal and string, doll parts and old toys, and, especially, icons of the 1950's. His assemblages evoke mystery and provide ample opportunity for discussion. more
Pozos Children's Project
Mi Pueblo, the Pozos Children's Project was organized by Geoff Winningham and Janice Freeman. The Project was conceived to offer the children of Pozos - a tiny Mexican community near San Miguel de Allende - an opportunity to express their town through photographic and monoprint images. Over 35 children, aged 7 - 16, were given the use of Holga cameras and were given instruction by Winningham and a handful of his Rice University students over the course of five field trips to Pozos. Freeman worked with the children creating monoprints in her studio with an etching press. An exhibition of the curated work has been shown in both the U.S. and Mexico. The Project has become an annual occasion. more
